Collective Liberation Doesn’t Exist Without Collective Responsibility

None of us are free until we are all free…

The deceptive network of hyper-independence, woven through the influences of white supremacy, colonialism, and capitalism, entangles individuals in a framework that cultivates the illusion of self-sufficiency while perpetuating the notion of inherent separation. This detrimental narrative cements societal constructs that contribute to the marginalization of different groups, upholding systems of inequality (Crenshaw, 1989). Originating from an ideology that prioritizes autonomy over interconnectedness, hyper-independence exposes us to vulnerability by fostering a culture that discourages collective responsibility and mutual support. In navigating a world shaped by these oppressive structures, it becomes evident that genuine freedom eludes us until we collectively dismantle the underpinnings of hyper-independence, acknowledging the profound truth that our liberation is profoundly interlinked. This recognition is not merely a rallying cry but an essential imperative for the emancipation of all.

The translation “I am because we are” beautifully encapsulates the essence of ubuntu:

  • “I am”: This first facet acknowledges individual existence, emphasizing that each person possesses a unique identity, experiences, and aspirations. It recognizes the value of individual agency and the richness that each contributor brings to the collective.

  • “Because”: This term introduces the crucial link between individual and collective existence. It implies that the very nature of one’s being is intricately tied to the presence and well-being of others. The existence of the self is interdependent, finding meaning and purpose…
